Mad Men - Decor and Ambience

Create a swinging 60s atmosphere for your guests to enjoy. Here are a few simple things you can do to bring this era to your home.

The easiest thing to do is to eliminate all signs of modern day living! Remove or cover all technology like cell phones, laptops, modern TVs and remote controls . Replace today’s magazines with vintage copies of Life and Vogue. If you can’t find copies, you can print the magazine cover and glue to the front of one of your own magazines.

Set the tone with mood lighting. You don’t need to buy new lamps, just swap out red, yellow, and orange party bulbs to give the space a warm, incandescent glow. Or you can find inexpensive lighting online.

You can find tutorials and free patterns to print online. Just search for 'wine glass lamp shade'. There are many places to buy them also. I found some in the wedding section at JoAnn Fabrics. You can use real tea light candles or the LED ones.

Find things around your house, borrow some vintage serving trays from your grandparents or pick some up at your local thrift store. Place a colorful rug in the middle of your party space, the shaggier the better. Add a few other household items you would have commonly seen in the home, like rotary phones, vinyl records, bar carts, ashtrays, or other vintage décor.

Square flower pots and modern art prints can give your party space the retro feel of a scene from Mad Men.
